Why You’ll Love My Recipe

I love this recipe because it’s full of simple and wholesome ingredients that will keep you satiated all morning long. This recipe doesn’t use protein powder, but instead uses peanut butter, hemp seeds, chia seeds, and soy milk. Personally, I find that protein powders are chalky in taste and gritty in texture. They also often hurt my stomach – I guess I personally find them hard to digest –  and so I’m always turning to other food forms like nuts and seeds.

This recipe totally delivers in terms of berry loaded flavour and creamy taste, as well as having perfectly smooth texture and fillingness! It’s an easy recipe using ingredients that you likely have on hand. It’s quickly become a family favourite – My 1.5-year-old and 4-year-old love it! I think you’re going to love it too.

Ingredient Notes

This recipe uses simple whofood ingredients, which is what I love about this recipe. There’s no protein powder, which I prefer because personally I always find protein powder hurts my stomach, but it has all the fixings to stick with you. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Mixed Berries – Frozen mixed berries work perfectly in this recipe for berry loaded flavour. I recipe tested with fresh berries but preferred frozen as it adds to the thickness and also keeps things cold. You can also opt-in for a single berry like frozen blueberries or frozen strawberries, I recipe tested both of these options and it was delicious.
  • Banana – Used for creamy sweetness in this recipe and thick texture. When I was originally recipe testing this berry smoothie I didn’t use bananas, but I found that the recipes wasn’t sweet or creamy enough. Adding just one banana gives this smoothie the perfect sweetness and also pops of creamy banana flavour, which is so lovely.
  • Soy Milk – I have intentionally used soy milk in this recipe as a substitute for cows milk because it’s similar in profile. You can totally swap the soy milk for almond milk or a plant-milk of choice, but it won’t follow as close a profile to cows milk.
  • Peanut Butter – Enhances creaminess and nutty taste. I love adding a scoop of peanut butter to my smoothies instead of protein powder. I also recipe tested this with almond butter and it was delish!
  • Hemp Hearts – I love adding hemp hearts to my smoothies instead of protein powder. It’s got a delicious nutty and creamy taste, and it doesn’t have a chalky taste that I usually find happens when I use protein powder in smoothies.
  • Chia Seeds – I love adding this simple ingredient to my smoothies for enhancing thickness without altering taste. I’ve also used chia seeds in addition to the nut butter and hemp seeds as an alternative for protein powder. I also recipe tested with flaxseed and it was a great substitute.
