Gourmet Peanut Butter and Banana Toast. I can get away with loving this childhood classic when it looks like this, right? Ever since I can remember I’ve been devoted to this dynamic duo. As a child it was always the same; my mum asking me what I’d like for breakfast and me yelling back – peanut butter and bananaaaa! I’d sit in the kitchen smashing the two toasts together sandwich style, with sticky hands and a big grin, as I smacked my lips with each peanuty bite. And 20 years later it seems that my breakfast affection for the PB and banana combo hasn’t changed. Should I be concerned?
It’s just that there is something so perfect about the pairing of nutty peanut butter with sweet banana that cannot be forgoed. It’s child’s play for wine and cheese, or champagne and caviar. The flavours are made for each other, and each bite is a comforting blast from the past that makes us stop and remember the joys of the little things in life. And actually, I suppose my taste palette has matured a little…. The traditional white Wonderbread has been switched out for freshly baked wholegrain, or the swap from Kraft PB to the all-natural kind, and the addition of gourmet toppings galore! This Gourmet PB and Banana Toast is served on whole grain toast, smothered in crunchy all-natural peanut butter and sliced banana, then drizzled with runny honey and sprinkled with granola, chia and coconut shavings. I’ll be it stickier and a tad harder to eat than the smashed sandwich style, but we’re grown-ups now – we had handle it.
But there’s no denying this childhood fav brings you back to your younger days. And decorating these pretties is an edible art project that’s too fun to pass. Good news is now that we are the adults nobody can tell us not to play with our food! Those banana hearts and stars gets me every time.
It’s safe to assume you’ll be fighting like kids over who gets which slice. 😉
