So, let me tell you exactly how to make this recipe, so that you can serve them pronto.
These vegan cinnamon rolls are:
It took me 4 tries to perfect this recipe for you, and p-e-r-f-e-c-t they are. It’s now my go-to recipe for cinnamon rolls. I’ve made them countless times for my friends and family.
In fact, I love to make this recipe around the holidays for my loved ones. My family and friends are wild about them, and you’d never know they were vegan. The recipe is pretty much fool-proof with easy to follow steps that anyone can do. It’s also a great activity to do with your loved ones around the Holidays.
Best of all, these cinnamon rolls fill your home with the delicious scent of cinnamon and sugar, which is so festive and inviting!
Now, let me explain exactly how to make these rolls.
So, how to make vegan cinnamon rolls? It’s really fun and fool-proof!
First, in a small saucepan, add the milk and vegan butter. Bring to medium heat and warm until melted (it should feel like bath water). Pour into a large mixing bowl and add the sugar and yeast. Whisk to combine, cover and let sit until foamy (about 10 mins). Then the flour to the liquid and mix well with a spatula. Cover and proof for one hour, or until almost doubled in size. Add ½ cup more flour and knead into a plush ball.
Then, sprinkle work surface with flour and roll the dough into a rectangle about ½ inch thick (mine was 18×11 inches).
In a small bowl, mix together the brown sugar and cinnamon. Slather the dough with melted butter to cover and sprinkle with the sugar. With the long edge, roll up the dough into a log and cut into 11 equal pieces (about 4.5 cm wide). Grease a 9-inch cake pan with the melted vegan butter and transfer the rolls to the pan. Brush the tops with more melted butter. Cover and let rise for 15 mins.
Bake at 350C/180F for 25 to 30 mins, or until lightly golden brown. Finish by drizzling with some icing sugar.
The icing sugar for this recipe is very simple to make, and it’s what creates the gooey sensation of a classic cinnamon roll. To make, simply mix together 1 cup of icing sugar with 2 to 3 tablespoons of almond milk. The texture should be thin enough to drizzle over the rolls. Feel free to add more almond milk by the teaspoon if it’s too thick for your liking.
It’s important to note that not all icing sugar is vegan! Some sugar companies use bone char, to help give it a bright white look. See this article from Veg News on which sugars are vegan. I like to use the brand Wholesome’s organic powdered sugar, which is certified vegan (affiliate link).
HOT TIP: If you can’t find certified vegan icing sugar, you can also make it at home! In a blender or food processor, pulse organic cane sugar a few times until it’s powdered in texture.
These cinnamon rolls are best served the same day as baking, for ultra fresh and fluffy texture!
However, they are still tasty the next day. If you have leftovers and want to enjoy them one day later, I suggest to wrap each roll individually in plastic wrap and enjoy the next day. When ready to eat, unwrap and pop in the microwave for 10 to 20 seconds to warm and soften.
(Normally I reccomend using reusable wrap, but since these rolls are so sticky – plastic wrap is a lot easier).
Vegan cinnamon rolls are best served the same day of making them. However, if you want to make the dough in advance, I suggest to do Steps 1 and 2 below, cover the dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight.
The next day, bring the dough to room temperature before starting. Continue with Step 3.
