This Pina Colada Smoothie is a tropical paradise! It’s so easy to make. Made with just 5 ingredients: pineapple, banana, almond milk, shredded coconut and hemp hearts (or protein powder). It’s a thick, sweet, satiating and tropical tasting smoothie that’s so refreshing! I like to make this for breakfast or a non-alcoholic pina colada recipe to share with friends!
Enjoy this thick smoothie in a glass with a wide straw, or pour into a bowl and top with pineapple, coconut and granola smoothie bowl style. This is a great recipe to start your day, or substitute it as a smoothie recipe in my 3-Day Cleanse.
So, let me tell you exactly how to make it!
Ingredient Notes:
This recipe uses simple wholefood ingredients, which is why I love it! Here’s what you’ll need:
Frozen Pineapple: A must in a pina colada recipe! I’ve opted-in for frozen pineapple to keep this smoothie cold and refreshing when blended! I also recipe tested with fresh pineapple and it worked great, but I do recommend adding 3-5 ice cubes for a refreshing cold smoothie.
Almond Milk: This recipe is vegan and dairy-free, made with almond milk. This is my plant-milk of choice and it lends itself really nicely to this recipe for a simple and light drink.
Banana: Adds thickness and creaminess without the cream! This is a great hack for adding creamy flavour to smoothies without cream or coconut milk. I recommend using frozen banana as it’s what gives thick texture, but fresh banana will work fine with the ice cube recommendation above.
Hemp Hearts: My preference for adding to smoothies instead of protein powder. I find protein powders tend to hurt my tummy; I think its because I have IBS. But I do not have that problem with hemp hearts and it helps my smoothies keep me fuller for longer. It also adds a lovely nuttiness to the recipe.
Shredded Coconut: Used for coconut flavour. A must in a pina colada recipe!

This Pina Colada Smoothie is a refreshing tropical paradise. Made with simple whole food ingredients like pineapple, banana, almond milk and hemp hearts. Ready in 5 minutes!
4tbsp hemp hearts(or 1 scoop vanilla protein powder)
2tbspshredded coconut
pinchturmeric(optional for bolder colour)
Instructions
Toss all the ingredients in a high speed blender and blend on low until smooth, 1 to 3 minutes. Optional to use splashed more almond milk to thin if desired.(If using protein powder: forgo adding the date, unless you like it very sweet. Most protein powders contain sugar).
Notes
This recipe is extra-thick! And can be enjoyed as a smoothie or smoothie bowl with toppings like fresh pineapple, banana and granola. If you prefer a thinner smoothie, add splashes more almond milk until you’ve reached desired consistency. This is also helpful if you don’t have a high-speed blender for easier blending.
