In this post I’m sharing my review for the best store-bought almond milk brands to buy. I will discuss which almond milk brands are most versatile for using in cereals, smoothies, and for making delicious frothy coffee lattes.
Almond milk is a great alternative to traditional milk and can be used as a direct 1:1 swap in your favourite recipes. But if you’re new to purchasing almond milk, you might not know which brands to choose from. Or which brand will perform best in the specific way you like to enjoy milk.
In this review I go through all the properties for selecting a quality almond milk brand, from taste to texture, and which almond milk brands are best to use for coffee and frothing for latte. I also factor in price and availability (i.e. where to find these brands, and are they easily accessible), and other characteristics like quality of ingredients, packaging etc.
If you don’t already know, I’m a huge plant-based milk connoisseur! From teaching how to make almond milk from soaked almonds, to quick DIY almond milk from almond butter, oat-based dairy-free milk, and even sharing everything you need to know about the Almond Cow Milk Maker – I’m your gal for all things plant milk related.
I love to make plant-based milks at home! That said, I often find myself grabbing a carton of store-bought almond milk for the simple ease, especially when life gets busy! So I understand first-hand that sometimes you don’t have the time nor energy to make it yourself. And because I’m such a plant-based milk connoisseur, I think you’ll find this store-bought almond milk review highly informative.
I’ve reviewed only unsweetened almond milk as it’s most similar to traditional milk. It’s also important to mention that this review is not sponsored. I was not given free product or compensated for this review, and had no contact with any of these brands.
Now, let me share with you the results for best store-bought almond milk brands!

Overall thoughts: The taste and texture of Earth’s Own Almond Unsweetened Original is great! It’s creamy and velvety. Frothing is hit or miss, sometimes it worked for me while other times it didn’t. It’s also price competitive. Ingredient list is good, but they use gums for thickener and stabilizers.
Overall score: 17/20

Overall thoughts: I really enjoy this almond milk by Wholefoods. It works great for smoothies and cereals, and also froths well for coffee and lattes making it very versatile. Overall thoughts: The taste of Simply Almond is smooth and creamy. Made with only 4 ingredients, it certainly my favourite brand for quality of ingredients. There are no gums or stabilizers. This drink is perfect for cereal and smoothies, but consistency changes when added to coffee and hot drinks to be cloudy/murky. Although it still tastes good it could put you off drinking it.

Overall thoughts: Almond Breeze is one of the first almond milk brands I used when going dairy-free. It’s been around for a long time. It’s available at most grocery stores with good consistency and taste. This almond milk is great for cereals, smoothies, coffee and hot drinks. However, it doesn’t froth.
Overall score: 13/20
Would we repurchase? Yes, but not my first choice.

Overall thoughts: The taste of Califia Farms almond milk is delicious, smooth and creamy. I like how the ingredient list in minimal, and that it’s BPA and carrageenan-free. I also love the packaging of this brand. It’s very pretty. This drink is perfect for cereal or smoothies, but does not froth for lattes. (Lost major points on its ability to froth). It’s also at a higher price point than other brands that perform better.
Overall score: 12.5/20
Would we repurchase? Yes, but not for making lattes. And not my first choice as the price point is higher than other brands which perform better.
Taste: 4.5/5 – really nice taste, very creamy and rich
Texture: 2/5 – not smooth in consistency, I found white chunks in mine even after shaking well
Ability to froth: 2/5- ability to froth was okay, it only frothed a little
Availability: 3/5 – Available at high end grocery chains and organic grocers
Quality of ingredients (i.e. organic, non-GMO, etc.): ingredient list is good, contains 1% or less of gellan gum, carageenan-free and kosher

Overall thoughts: The taste of Pacific Foods almond milk is rich and creamy. It was one of my favourite tasting almond milks from the review. However, consistency was not smooth, with white flecks floating to the top even after shaking well. It also doesn’t froth well for lattes. Overall, I was disappointed that this almond milk didn’t perform better. Price is also more expensive than others on the market, which performed better.
Overall score: 11.5/20
Would we repurchase? No
Taste: 3.5/5 – taste was okay, a bit bitter, not my favourite
Texture: 2/5 – consistency was smooth, and performed well in coffee and hot drinks
Ability to froth: 0/5- Although the box claims this almond milk is “barista approved” it did not froth for me. Very disappointing.
Availability: 2/5 – Available at high end grocery chains
Quality of ingredients (i.e. organic, non-GMO, etc.): ingredient list is okay. Includes gums and thickener.
Cost: $3.49 / 946 ml
Packaging: Paper, recyclable
Overall thoughts: Of all the almond milk brands, this was the most disappointing. I didn’t love the taste of this almond milk; it was a bit bitter. The container also claimed to be “barista approved,” however it did not froth for me, not even a little bit.
Overall score: 7.5/20
Would we repurchase? No

This is the first result when I googled “best affordable almond milk” and the post gets cut off! I wish I knew what it said
The review was cut off, can you let me know what your findings were?
Hello, Is it possible for you to help me find the review? The article cuts off for me?
Great review; thanks for doing it! If you were to update it again, I’ve very interested to see how the two most popular private label brands (Walmart’s Great Value and Target’s Good and Gather) compare. I like both of them more than I’d expected to, so I’m curious.
So glad you enjoyed the review Zain! We don’t have Target here in Canada but I’ll have to try the Wal-Mart brand!
Thanks for doing this. However I completely disagree with Natura in last place. I think it is one of the better beverages out of this list. They are the only company that sources all of their ingredients in Canada.
Hi Jacob, thanks for the message. I’m happy to hear that you like the Natura brand! For me, it was a pass – but glad that you enjoyed it!
