Holiday Porridge: Apple Molasses Porridge

Hi guys! Hope you’re having a LOVELY Wednesday! I wanted to share this quick and easy porridge recipe that’s just PERFECT for the holidays! It’s my Apple Molasses Porridge, made using Rogers Grains Original Porridge Oats, cooked over the stove top with oat milk and topped with blackstrap molasses, apples, grapes and pomegranate. Doesn’t it look like Christmas in a bowl?

I really love this porridge combo for the holidays because of the of blackstrap molasses. It really adds the most beautiful warm and spiced sweetness that we so adore around Christmas time. Typically when making oats I’ll add a little maple syrup or organic honey to the bowl, but with this recipe it’s the blackstrap molasses that sweetens the bowl. And all you need is a teaspoon. It’s so dark and thick, and almost looks like chocolate doesn’t it? The flavour is a sweet, deep almost burnt caramel smell that is completely euphoric.

I also generally believe anything that’s bolder in colour and flavour has got to be more nutrient packed whether it be fact or not. But according to Livestrong that is certainly the case with blackstrap molasses vs. the regular kind. It gets its colour from being boiled three times. The triple boiling and sugar extraction process results in a blackstrap molasses thats nutritionally dense and sweet. It contains the same vitamins and minerals as a “second” molasses, but in a more concentrated form. Blackstrap molasses also contains antioxidant compounds.

As for the oats, this was a gift I had received from Rogers Grains in a care package of many of their wonderful products. I recieved it in the summer time actually, and have been waiting until the winter to make a decadent winter spiced porridge bowl. I really loved how these their Porridge blend made for a hearty and beautiful Christmas bowl. It’s a gorgeous blend of oat flakes, wheat bran, oat bran and flaxseed, which makes it a little more hearty and earthy than just plain oats. And it worked perfectly in this bowl.

I’ve then topped it with some thinly sliced apple, red grapes and pomegranite seeds. I love this winter fruity combination especially with the sweet and spiced molasses. They go together like Santa and his elves.

These bowls are the perfect winter bowls to serve come Chritsmas Day, and I do hope you enjoy them as much as we did.

Happy holidays to you!
