Black Chia Pudding and Butterfly Pea Buckwheat Smoothie

Okay yes, the title for this chia smoothie parfait is a mouthful. But that’s exactly what I want from this gorgeous blend; a big mouthful of it!

The base of this smoothie was made using activated charcoal juice I stumbled upon at The Daily Juicery (part of Parent Primeur in Wazemmes). Of course I needed it for my blog! Regardless of it costing 6 euros, much too expensive to become a hobby, I would have left the store kicking and screaming without it. And it’s a good job, because I must say I was SO impressed by the TDJ’s juices. In addition to this black juice I also got their muscle green and they were both delicious! They were naturally sweet (I don’t like my drinks too sugary), they weren’t too thick (I tend to water down my juices), and they had the perfect citrus bite. All-in-all a win-win.

And the black juice (made of apple, lemon, kiwi, basil and a little bit of activated carbon) made perfect for the Black Chia Pudding in this recipe. It was a fruit pudding paradise. The Butterfly Pea Buckwheat Smoothie proved a perfect pairing too! It was a blend of pineapple, banana, soaked buckwheat, soy yogurt, lime, and butterfly pea powder (which gives its purple hue). What a light delight! The flavour was refreshing and beachy. And a beautiful alternative to my typical milky chia and smoothie blend.

As for the butterfly pea powder, this was a generous gift from Rawnice, who sent me their Butterfly Pea, Blue Sprirulina, and Pink Pitaya Dragon Fruit plant powders to try. What a colourful gift! I have yet to try the Spirulina and Pitaya, but I love this Butterfly Pea powder so much! Not only is it a beautiful hue, it’s packed with nutrients so you feel good about eating it. Butterfly Pea is  a plant specie, rich with antioxidants that’s said to boost energy levels. It’s also used in ayurvedic medicine. The powder is sort of a dusty purple hue when you mix it into your smoothie, but if you add a little citrus, like lime and pineapple in this smoothie the colour gets more vivid! It’s how I got this stunning purple hue. And don’t you agree that eating healthy is so much easier when its beautiful? If you’re wondering how all our favourite health food bloggers are getting those gorgeous pink, blues and purple hues on Instagram  it’s pretty plant powders like these!

What I also love about this powder is that it doesn’t have a strong or overpowering taste. Just like the activated carbon in my black juice, a little goes a long way, allowing for the other ingredients to take precedent. I can only imagine how much easier it is for mums to convince their kids to eat blue food! Don’t you wish these beautiful powders were available when we were kids? I probably would have gotten away with ice cream at least five times a week! Like a kid in a candy store, kids these days are so lucky to live that dream!

A little natural powder is a pretty picture isn’t it? And you can feel fantastic about indulging with these healthful ones. That’s something I can get on board with! So go ahead and add more colour to your life with this Black Chia Pudding and Butterfly Pea Buckwheat Smoothie.

Eating healthful never looked so good.
